Hack Fact Check

CONGRESSIONAL QUARTERLY SAYS 10TH DISTRICT FAVORS CARNEY

Clarks Summit, PA—Congressional Quarterly, the non-partisan and well respected publication on both politics and policy, has come out with recent race ratings and concluded that Pennsylvania's 10th district race is "Leans Democratic" and favors Chris Carney.

From Congressional Quarterly (8/14):

Meanwhile, the Republicans are looking to reclaim some of the seats they lost last time. ... But Carney, a military veteran and former counterterrorism adviser to the Pentagon, is no greenhorn, and Republican Chris Hackett, who heads a recruitment and temporary staffing business, is now an underdog.

CQ Politics race rating: Leans Democratic.

"This has confirmed what we've known for awhile," said Vincent Rongione, Campaign Manager for Carney for Congress, "Chris Carney has broad support from every corner of the 10th district. He is well respected for his service, independence and integrity by Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike. Our campaign is about doing what is best for the people of northeast and central Pennsylvania, and we're glad to have a publication as well respected as Congressional Quarterly affirming our position."

Washington Post’s political column, “The Fix,” also noted Carney’s growing strength in his bid for re-election, writing:

“Carney is doing everything right -- voting his district (he supported the recent domestic surveillance bill) and stockpiling cash. Republican nominee Chris Hackett has already given three quarters of a million dollars to the campaign and is likely to keep giving.” (Washington Post, 7/25/08)

Roll Call Newspaper also changed their view of the race to reflect Carney’s strong campaign:

“But with three months until the general election, it appears the 10th district might not even be the GOP’s No. 1 target in the state anymore. While the race is still considered to be highly competitive, changing demographics in the district and other emerging competitive races in the region might be stealing the spotlight from the northeastern Pennsylvania hot seat. ‘I can tell you that Carney is in better shape than in the beginning of the year,’ said a Republican operative in the Keystone State.” (Roll Call, 7/29/08).
